Episode 7: How to stay on track of your goals in 2020 with Donna Campisi
It’s that time of year again, where most of us think of new year resolutions. and set ourselves bigger and better goals, for the new year ahead.
I love hearing people’s aspirations, and reasons for making their promises, but sometimes it’s easy to let these high aims fall aside and get distracted.
Before you make huge goals for 2020, I’d like to encourage you to make time to reflect, and be grateful for the year you have just lived. Learning from experiences whether they are cheerful memories, or others that you now know you could have handled differently, will help lead you to your new goal.
Ask yourself:
- What can I do to make a difference?
- What positive change can I make?
- How can I help?
These are questions that are great to consider when making plans for the new year ahead.
Most of the time we seem to make a new year resolution or goal based around our own personal needs or wants, for example: giving up smoking, exercising more, losing 10 kilos, etc. But unfortunately, a high percentage of these promises aren’t kept for too long. Why is that? Exactly, it’s all about the WHY!
If you really want to give up smoking, ask yourself why? If you really want to exercise more, ask yourself why? If you really want to lose those 10 kilos, ask yourself why? When you dig deep, also ask how will this benefit me AND others around me? This is where you can really achieve results when keeping yourself accountable, to yourself and others who are important to you.
Have you noticed when it comes to our own needs, we tend to put ourselves second, as opposed to those we love and care about? It’s common, because we actually care about others. This isn’t a bad thing!
Maybe if you make your reason why you want to achieve your goal for yourself, but also for others, and remind yourself how it will benefit both parties, this will keep you on track. An example: “I want to exercise so I’m fit and healthy to play with my children and be a good role model for them.” Awesome! This reason why is for both you and your children.
I’m not suggesting to forget about you, but when you make your reason ‘Why’ about something or someone at a deeper emotional level, things start happening for the long run, and your goal is achieved!
Your reason could be “I want to exercise so I’m fit and healthy and lose 10 kg so I gain confidence in myself to step up in my job, go out on dates, meet people, be happy
But this is about starting and staying on track.
To keep you on track, I recommend to acknowledge the following (you can write this down if you like):
- What have I learned through the tough times in 2019?
- What is the theme for me in 2019, and will that theme or behaviour keep me on track in 2020?
- What am I grateful for in 2020?
- What/who will help me grow further with my new goal in 2020?
- What will I continue to do? As this is what gives me positive results.
- I will choose my support buddies wisely in 2020. Who are you surrounding yourself with?
Sometimes we are all get up and go about a new year with new year goals, believe me, I love that!
But remember to acknowledge what you already have, and ask these questions of yourself to get you started and keep you on track.
